Linux Servers and Windows ServersWhich type of server hosting should you choose?Offering windows and linux servers
Easyspace offers all of its Dedicated Server hosting packages on both Windows and Linux platforms. So, what are the differences and which platform should you choose? We've pulled together some information for you below which should hopefully help you in your decision making.
General Server Specification
The general specifications of our servers remain the same regardless of whether you choose Linux hosting or Windows hosting. General specifications only change depending on what level of package you choose. For example, if you want a Business Server then CPU, RAM, HDD (and some other specs) will remain the same regardless of whether you choose a Linux or Windows server. Those general specs such as CPU, RAM etc are package specific (Starter, Business or Pro levels) rather than platform specific.
Pricing
Windows Dedicated Servers are typically more expensive than Linux Dedicated Servers largely because of the platform operating system costs. With Easyspace, the difference is just £10.00* per month on all 3 dedicated server packages.
However, even although Windows servers are £10.00* per month more expensive than Linux, an option to upgrade free of charge to Windows 2008 is available.
Scripting and Database requirements
In honesty, this is perhaps the key area to consider when deciding whether to use Linux hosting or Windows hosting. What language will you be coding in (ASP? Php?)? and what sort of database (if any) will you most likely be using i.e. MySQL? MS SQL? MS Access?
In general, both types of hosting can handle HTML, Javascript and various other languages, but server side scripting, database software and some software applications tend to be reliant on either Windows or Linux. For example, ASP, MS SQL and MS Access run better on Windows based servers while Php and MySQL perform better on Linux servers. Therefore, if your website has .php extensions then Linux may suit you best, while Windows might be the better option if your website has .asp extensions.
What features come with each type of server?
As mentioned above, the general spec of the server (CPU, RAM, HDD etc) is the same regardless of whether you choose Linux or Windows (those features are package specific rather than platform specific). Below are the main features / differences between our Windows and Linux servers.
To us the choice is largely about what your intended use is for the server rather than a simple preference of one platform over the other. There are plenty of resources online with people offering opinions on which is best and why (see links below), some good and some bad. Our advice to you is to be sure of what you want to do with your server and find out whether Linux or Windows offers the specifications and features required.
